Michael Redford died on his seventeenth birthday – the night Eddie picked him up off the street, shot him full of heroin and assaulted him.

Now he’s Mikey and he works for Joss. With streaked blond hair and a cute smile, he sleeps by day and services clients at night. Sometimes he remembers his old life, but with what he’s become now, he knows there is no return to his comfortable middle-class background.

Then he makes a friend in Lee. A child of the streets, Lee demands more from friendship than Mikey is prepared to give. But the police are closing in on them now and Mikey’s not sure anymore who he really is – streetwise Mikey or plain Michael Redford.

Hamelin’s Child was long-listed in the UK Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger Award. A thriller set in the seedy world of London's drug rings, this book contains strong scenes and adult material.

Terrific read! Upon reading the first 20 to 30 pages, I had no idea I'd enjoy this novel quite so much. Plot was well laid out. The main characters progressed in a natural and realistic development. This was a dark and gritty novel.
One of the few faults in the novel related the Michael character. At times his thoughts and reasoning seemed to belong to an older person, not a seventeen-year-old. There were a few proof-reading errors, but nothing too distracting.
I had no idea this novel was part of a six-book series until the last twenty pages, when I was prompted to buy book two. If I hadn't known that, the ending would have been an unsatisfactory cliffhanger. I will be buying the remaining five novels.
Congratulations and acclaim to DJ Bennett for an entertaining read!

Hamelin Child edition by DJ Bennett Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

To do anything but read this book all at once doesn't do it justice. Really. (Also makes it a bit more possible to lose little bits of storyline if you take too many pauses, but hey, the first one sounded nicer). It basically shows a slow transformation from kid to street kid, and while there were times when - tiny spoiler here - the author seemed to lose momentum and just made Mikey/Michael get raped by some dude, either a 'customer' or the creepy in-house Eddie, which is a title in itself, it holds your attention well and slowly weaves the plotlines together in majestically messy form, and, yeah, it sounds mean, but it's actually a compliment from a fellow author. I'm not sure about Kate, Mikey/Michael's sister, but it was a reasonable break from what was going on at the house. Good start to a series and I gotta say, I loved how the author described shooting up with such details so it was as if you'd just taken a hit yourself.

If you have a weak stomach or dislike the concept of reading about sodomy or boy prostitutes, I recommend you pass. Not much gore to speak of but I can say with a big sigh of relief that this isn't one of those books where the main character goes through unthinkable situations and immediately bounces back like a TV dude.
Chiswick, England. Eddie introduced himself to Michael “Mikey” Redford (17) in the bar.
Michael was wasted.
Jenny (Michael’s ex-GF) was trying to make him jealous by dancing with another guy.
Eddie & Mikey left they bar, caught a cab & were now at Eddie’s place.
Joss shot Mikey up with heroin.

Edward Felsen (40+, gay) did other things to Mikey also.
Joss Harper (drug dealer) was calling all the shots in the household.
Lee Martin (street kid, drug addict, gay) shot him/Michael up.
Kate Redford (Michael’s elder sister) Was a receptionist at the Well Woman clinic.
Colin (Kate’s fiancé) after they got married wanted Kate to move to Carlisle where he had a job waiting for him.
Kate went to see DI Darwin “Derek” (35+) about Michael who had been missing for quite some time now.
Mikey was now going to work for Eddie selling Heroin on the streets.
Lee was also going to tag along.

DI Derek took Kate with him as they cruised the streets looking for Michael.
DI Steve Peters was involved in the missing persons case also.
Carl Phillips (drug dealer) name came up also.
What would DI Derek & DI Steve Peters uncover?

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written crime book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime movie, or a mini TV series. To be continued. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

This is a page-turner! With the opioid addiction and its effects drawing lots of attention, "Hamelin's Child" is a dark, gritty look at the darkest side of addiction, i.e.,how it affects the most vulnerable underage children. I thought I pretty much knew how deeply the drugs destroy lives. But this story goes one step beyond and brings the reader right into the horrible dens of kidnapping and forced addiction. There are no holds barred. This story has to be as brutal and honest as it is or it won't tell the reader that something must be done, and soon. It's the perfect cautionary tale for today. What makes it particularly gripping is that it evokes strong, emotional reactions. The more we find out about Michael and his downward journey into a veritable hell, the more we want to know, because "Hamelin's Child" shows us what we already know and shocks us by what we don't know. In spite of its in-your-face candor, we are assured that hope CAN be found and fostered in the confines and terrors that could lurk behind any door we pass. This is a sub-plot that shows just how a dysfunctional family deals with the disappearance of a loved one and the exhausting toll it takes on many levels. This novel is beautifully written in its frankness and its length and deserves to be read for what we learn, and what we might do if addiction touches our own "safe" world. There are five more books in the series, but I haven't read them yet. I will when my heartbeat returns to normal!
